I agree with you that maybe that did turn some people off, such a shame because I think it is such a fun tool. Funny that I find voice recording easier to coordinate my thoughts nowadays as I tend to ponder too long over the written text, I have even started using the voice recorder on my mobile phone, which is about 5 yrs old. Thanks so much for your participation and insight I look forward to keeping in touch via your blog. I appreciate your frustration with the lack of people engaging with the VT, but you must remember the 1% rule...to get one active participant, you need to reach 100 people.

I do agree with Karen...that the technology might have been a tad scary despite your great video that showed us how to use the VT. Maybve it would have helped if you embedded your VT in your blog.

The other thing it might be worth reflecting on is the topic of the conversation...did it need to be controversial, for example? I think you need to think about how you sell this to people...why should they take part? What is the value to them? What will they get out of it?

You might be interested in how Meena facilitated her asynchronous event last year: http://meenaadhikari.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Thank you once again, Kim. For me I found it a bit of a mental hurdle to get over the idea of recording my voice. Perhaps that also prevented others from participating? In the end - as with many new things, the actual experience was way easier than the anticipation. I was uncertain about the volumne level of my recording but ran out of time to redo it. As a tool it is more time consuming than straight text. I think now I need some time between the course ending and making any better comment about it, I am still seeing mainly positives, which is amazing in itself.
I found it easy to post a thought on vt. I think that is because I have become very used to talking into a mike, giving myself permission to say what comes along and not feeling judged on what that may be. I am thinking as I write this of Sarah's comments on OER that putting yourself out there with material can brings feelings of vulnerability through peer observation. With new things I often think of the old adage 'feel the fear and do it anyway'.

Why would you use voice thread and how would you attract people to it, given there are now a plethora of tools to select from.

Well for what it is worth; there are many people who can think and talk at the same time, in fact this may be a preferred form of providing feedback, especially where timezones are a consideration.

You may be able to use vt to provide feedback on an assignments and tease out more information from a student through asking deeper questions. I see there is a text component and that would be useful for students to see and hear the question.

there you goJane Scrippshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03452210181122335571noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046206307202688950.post-33563962671852323972010-10-23T14:11:24.438-07:002010-10-23T14:11:24.438-07:00Hi Kim...I got very confused there for a moment L...Hi Kim...I got very confused there for a moment LOl So rushed off and kicked you out of the FO2010 blog so you no longer have any magic powers there :0 :)

I was just thinking about this idea of being an auditory learner...if you had a choice what would you prefer...to listen to a recording or watch a video?Sarah Stewarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00480597227427423793noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046206307202688950.post-24008804435713924612010-10-23T13:46:33.226-07:002010-10-23T13:46:33.226-07:00Don't forget to think about how you attract pe...Don't forget to think about how you attract people to voicethread...and how you keep the conversation going...what you want your outcome to be...how you instruct people about what VT is and how your measure the success of your outcome.Sarah Stewarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00480597227427423793noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046206307202688950.post-33870103429541711732010-10-22T14:15:35.441-07:002010-10-22T14:15:35.441-07:00Hi Kim,

It brings out the richness of being connected across cultures, across disciplines and across ages. The blog sharing in this course really does help draw out that shared experience filtered through a variety of lenses - our own. I've learned that here in Australia, we have a particular cultural approach to sharing online that is a little difference to other cultures. Have you noticed that? (In my opinion it is less formal and more like conversations.)
I have now been to June Holley's blog to discover more about her philosophy on Network Weaving - a concept that intrigues and confirms for me the effect of culture on our Australian online networking.
This concept is explored in Nancy White's book on Digital Habitats - she calls in 'stewarding'.

I believe that the task of making the links within nodes of a network is clearly the role of a steward or many stewards - each of whom 'facilitate' the growth of the connectedness - and enable to community to emerge.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046206307202688950.post-55260853558303433962010-08-19T07:30:51.554-07:002010-08-19T07:30:51.554-07:00Hi Kim, just wondering what kind of an online netw...Hi Kim, just wondering what kind of an online network do you have?Sarah Stewarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00480597227427423793noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046206307202688950.post-86833985211537007352010-08-15T17:40:56.457-07:002010-08-15T17:40:56.457-07:00Thanks Sarah, I did have a great time in Queenstow...Thanks Sarah, I did have a great time in Queenstown, we always do and keep going back, that was our third visit.
I will give Twitter another go.
I am thinking more about my online style, and wondering how humour can be conveyed, and work, without being f2f.
